I went through the same thing and failed miserably! So I decided to do something about it. I've followed this motto: "Don't ask for it. Get it yourself." So I did: I started my own cross-platform Video Editor called "Saya". My goal is to replicate all the features and UI of commercial video editors. Actually I've cloned most of the menus from Adobe Premiere, and I have every submenu documented somewhere in my hard drive. Saya is being written in C++ and wxWidgets. So far I have only designed part of the core, but when I finish, development will get faster.
